New Year New Hope

The New Year is always a time for reflection and a time that many people review their career and personal life. Working in recruitment, it is always interesting to hear out peoples varying priorities in life and to hear about all sorts of different workplace issues and concerns. New year new hope.

I do believe that the most important thing in life is to be happy, and if something isn’t working for you in either your home life or work life, then you need to focus on improving it and making changes. As a society, we are spending more and more time at work these days and so it is becoming more increasingly important to love your job! I do, however, also feel that it is equally as important to have a happy work/life balance. In order for this to succeed many people advise that you set specific goals and plans. I agree with this and think that it is important to always have something outside of work to look forward to, however big or small.

What works for me?

Writing down my goals works for me. I know I am thought of as being old-fashioned as I still carry around a paper diary as well! However, many people say that by writing down your goals, your thinking is clearer and you are more likely to achieve the goal. I have also learnt about my goals being SMART

S -specific

M-measurable

A-attainable

R-realistic

T-timely

Another tip that works for me is writing down my daily tasks and plans. Again, making sure they are realistic etc. There is nothing more fulfilling than “ticking off” tasks on my list. I need to make sure I stay focussed, and whilst, I am good at multi-tasking, I need to set out my priorities for the day and ensure they are completed. Tasks and plans can also be monthly or quarterly.

Regular rewards or holidays I feel are also very important. Everyone needs some “time-out” and if there is a good support structure in place in the workplace, this “time-out”  can help refresh the mind and body and renew energies.

Staying positive and mixing with positive people is also another important factor I believe. I far prefer spending both work and personal time with people that see the opportunities and not the obstacles.

I guess, we are all seeking the key to happiness and sometimes we have to make changes and take risks. Life is a journey and if we can enrich it along the way, then so much the better.

Good luck.
