Attending an interview can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if it has been a while since you last had one . It goes without saying that you should be researching the company in detail before the interview. Here are some specific areas to focus on for more thorough interview preparation.
Look at the company’s “mission statement”
A mission statement outlines the overall goal, values and strategy of the company. Gain a good understanding of what they want to achieve in their business.
Get a feel for the company ethos
This is your chance to research what the company culture is like. Is there a rigid corporate structure? Are employees treated like peers or subordinates? What values and beliefs does the organisation uphold? What does the employees attitude and aspirations tell you about their business? The easiest way to assess this is to read employee written reviews or by talking to people who have worked at the company.
Analyse the competitors
Another important task is to determine what sets the business apart from their competition? What are their strengths and weaknesses in comparison?
Get personal with your preparation
It’s always a good idea to preempt questions about yourself that the interviewer may have about you. Try to determine if there is anything on your CV that the interviewer would have reservations about. Ensure you prepare answers to overcome these and practice explaining them.
Prepare two or three really good questions
These can be about the company, team or role but should validate that you have done thorough research beforehand. Ask about their expectations of you in this role or the business vision and long term goals. You could ask about a typical day, the biggest challenge their team faces or what the interviewers management style is.
Be diplomatic about ex-employers
If you have left previous organisations because of an issue with your employer or staff members, prepare to answer these questions with diplomacy. Never talk negatively about previous employers.
Social media screening
Always ensure your social media accounts and public photos are appropriate. Be sure to remove any that you wouldn’t want a prospective employer to see! Clients do their research too so make sure you are not putting them off before you even meet them.
Master your mindset for maximum success
Before and during the interview, practice being positive to overcome feelings of nervousness. Fear and excitement are very similar emotions that are produced by the same part of your brain. Try to focus on the feeling of excitement, rather than the feeling of fear.
Be aware of your body language
During the interview, be aware of your body language so that you are not coming across as negative, nervous or close-minded. Don’t cross your arms, slouch in the chair or fidget nervously . Sit up straight with your back in the chair, keep your feet placed on the floor and nod your head whilst listening.
Gratitude and courtesy always
Remember to say a heartfelt thank you to the interviewer when the interview ends. End the meeting with a firm handshake and a smile.
