Writing a perfect CV

TOP TIPS FOR A PERFECT CV

The CV is the make or break of your job application. Everything in it tells a potential new employer something about you and it is all they have to decide whether they should see you or not! Writing a perfect CV is so important. Please find below our top tips.

  1. Include relevant information. There is no need to list your Summer jobs when you were 18, if you are applying for a senior role in your 40s.
  2. Keep it simple and easy to read.
  3. Tweak your CV for each individual job application, making sure you highlight where you have got experience with aspects of your desired job role. Target your CV and its content accordingly.
  4. No matter how many times you read it, there will nearly always be mistakes, so ask someone with a good eye for detail to check it over for you.
  5. Employers, on average, spend less than 30 seconds on a CV in the very first stage of the process. So, size matters. No CV should be longer than 2 pages ideally with all relevant job information clearly visible with most recent experience first.
  6. Make sure your contact information (email, mobile phone, address) is at the top of your CV
  7. Dont leave gaps in your CV as this immediately makes employers suspicious. If you have been out of work, put a positive spin on it. Did you volunteer? Do a course? Develop any skills?
  8. If it is possible to accompany your CV with a well-written, self-promoting cover letter, so much the better, as this could really add value to your application. A short personal statement within this cover letter is always a good idea.
